Parrish Art Museum Hosts Landscape Pleasures Horticultural Event Featuring A Symposium With Tours Of Extraordinary East End Gardens

Parrish Art Museum is hosting its Landscape Pleasures Horticultural event which features a symposium with leaders in the field and exclusive tours of extraordinary East End gardens on Saturday and Sunday, June 10 and 11. It launches with a Saturday morning symposium at the museum with leaders in landscape architecture: Charles Birnbaum, Raymond Jungles, and Rebecca McMackin. 

On Saturday, June 10, the event begins with a continental breakfast from 8:30 to 9 AM, followed by the symposium from 9 AM to noon.

On Saturday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, Landscape Pleasures supporters at the Sponsor level ($600) and above will receive a special invitation to an evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at a private residence.

On Sunday, June 11, from 10 AM to 3 PM, registrants enjoy self-guided tours of five extraordinary private gardens on the East End. Five private residences in Bridgehampton, Southampton, and Amagansett, including landscapes by Hollander Design Landscape Architects, LaGuardia Design Group, Landscape Details, and Piazza Horticultural.

Charles A. Birnbaum, FASLA, FAAR

Charles Birnbaum is the president, CEO, and founder of The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF). Prior to creating TCLF, Birnbaum spent 15 years as the coordinator of the National Park Service Historic Landscape Initiative (HLI) and a decade in private practice in New York City, with a focus on landscape preservation and urban design. Since taking the helm at the foundation in 2008, Birnbaum’s major projects include the web-based initiative What’s Out There (a searchable database of the nation’s designed landscape heritage). He served as a Loeb Fellow at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, during which time he founded TCLF. Birnbaum has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Rome Prize in Historic Preservation and Conservation; the ASLA Alfred B. LaGasse Medal, followed by the President’s Medal and ASLA Medal; the Landezine International Landscape Honour Award; and the Garden Club of America’s Historic Preservation Medal.

Raymond Jungles, PLA, FASLA

Raymond Jungles is the founder of the award-winning Miami-based Landscape Architecture firm, Raymond Jungles, Inc. (RJI), founded in 1982 and recognized for excellence in the design and implementation of public and private sector projects. As a landscape architect and in his practice, he strives to preserve and protect existing ecosystems while also evoking human interaction and improving the lives of others. Jungles pursued this passion through his adolescence and developed it into his career after graduating with a degree in Landscape Architecture, with honors, from the University of Florida in 1981. In 2006, Jungles was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. His work has been celebrated with numerous awards, including three National Awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects for the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve, the Sky Garden, and Island Modern. He is also a recipient of 56 design awards from the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Rebecca McMackin

Rebecca McMackin is an ecologically obsessed horticulturist and garden designer. She spent a decade as Director of Horticulture of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where she managed 85 acres of diverse parkland organically. Their research into cultivating urban biodiversity and ethical management strategies has influenced thousands of people and entire urban parks systems to adopt similar approaches.

McMackin recently completed a Loeb Fellowship at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and designed a native wildflower garden for the entrance of the Brooklyn Museum. She has been published by and featured in The New York Times, the Landscape Institute, and on NPR and PBS. McMackin holds MScs from Columbia University and University of Victoria in landscape design and biology.
