Lori Campbell, a surrealist painter who lives and works in Montauk, works mostly with oils on canvas. The artist will have two upcoming shows this month.
The first, “In The Garden,” will open on Saturday, June 4, at East Hampton Gardens, with a reception from 4 to 7 PM. The second, “Summer Dreams,” will take place at Lucore Art in Montauk on Saturday, June 25, with a reception from 4 to 7 PM. The exhibit will run through July 14.
As an artist, Campbell has always been attracted to the surreal. “I like to find the humanity in inanimate objects, and vice versa. I’m inventing characters but also looking for their soul. Even if they look more like a tree or a chair or a plant than a person,” said Campbell.
Just as important as her subjects, is the medium she uses to create them. “I love working with oils. They bring a seriousness and feeling of tradition to the levity and weirdness in my work. I find that super fun.”
Campbell studied art at the University of Colorado, the Art Students League, The Art Barge in Amagansett, and the School of Visual Arts. She is the former owner and creative director of Dweck and Campbell advertising, where she won a Cannes Gold Lion.
