For breast cancer survivors who are looking to make a difference in their community, offer hope to other breast cancer patients, or seeking to support a worthwhile cause, the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is actively looking for volunteers for their upcoming virtual training beginning on Monday, February 24 from 10 AM – 1 PM.
In this four-part virtual training, which will meet on consecutive Mondays from February 24 to March 17, volunteers will receive training on topics including community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity, and fundraising. The training also includes how to address the needs of hotline callers and personalized exercises to equip volunteers with the knowledge they need to speak to newly diagnosed patients and caregivers. Volunteers will help the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program advance their mission in the community.
The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has worked with breast cancer patients and communities across Long Island for the past 45 years to offer support and resources to newly diagnosed patients. “Our volunteers play an integral role in our mission, and we couldn’t do what we do without them,” said Nina Foley, LCSW, Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program’s Hotline and Volunteer Supervisor. “It’s important that we get the right people to fill these volunteer roles because they’re not just speaking with patients, but they’re also joining our family of advocates,” she said.
Once trained, new volunteers will work alongside the program’s seasoned volunteers, some of whom have been serving in a volunteer capacity with the breast cancer program for nearly 30 years, and who often speak of the enriching nature of the work given their backgrounds and personal experience with breast cancer.
The volunteer training is currently being offered to breast cancer survivors who are one year post-diagnosis. For those interested in volunteering, the process will include an initial interview, followed by attendance at all four of the training sessions, and finally, an exit interview to ensure the program is a good fit.
