Who will be the next big star of the art world hanging on the line?
Guild Hall’s Clothesline Art Sale in East Hampton was conceived by a board member in the late summer of 1946 and was quickly organized with local artists to sell their works and split the proceeds — a total of $400 that first year.
75 years later it is one of the most beloved community events in the Hamptons and one of Guild Hall’s biggest fundraisers of the year. Since its inception, Clothesline has provided accessible artwork to the community while supporting the local artists who thrive here. Throughout Guild Hall’s history, tens of thousands of artists including Alfonso Ossorio, James Brooks, John Little, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Elaine and Willem de Kooning have shared their talents to support the institution in this unique annual fundraising event.
The Clothesline Art Sale returns on Saturday, July 24, from 9 AM to 4 PM. Over 650 works from 230+ artists will be displayed alphabetically outdoors in front of the building at 158 Main Street as well as online for those who cannot attend in person. Works range in price from $75 to $5,000 with all proceeds split 50/50 between the artist and Guild Hall. The event will be moved to Sunday, July 25 in the case of inclement weather. Admission is free and the “Alexis Rockman: Shipwrecks” galleries will be open as will the new eAT Coffee Bar, which will cater to thirsty and hungry artwork shoppers.
“We are so excited to continue the annual tradition of Clothesline, and it is especially festive this year as part of our 90th Anniversary events,” said Guild Hall Chief Creative Officer Amy Kirwin. “It has been, and always will be, part of our mission to shine a light on local artists, and this beloved event is the perfect way to celebrate the creative community while raising funds to support our year-round programming.”
