Broom Making Demonstrations
Step back in time and discover the lost art of broom making as it was practiced in the 1800s. This live demonstration brings history to life, showcasing how everyday tools were crafted with skill, ingenuity, and tradition. Watch as Southampton History Museum's Director of Operations & Programs, and historic broom maker Tim Van Wickler uses authentic materials and techniques to create sturdy, functional brooms just as they were made over a century ago.
Visitors will gain insight into the importance of broom making in daily 19th-century life, the evolution of this essential household item, and the craftsmanship behind each hand-bound broom. This program invites questions and conversation, making it perfect for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the trades that shaped our past.
The Southampton History Museum's free public programs are made possible, in part, by a Suffolk County Omnibus Grant and by funding from the residents of the Southampton Union Free School District. Thanks to the generous support of our community, admission to all of the museum's historic sites and exhibitions is also free to the public.
