On Friday, January 7, at 6 pm, onsite at the Lichtenstein Theater, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill will present a screening of “Marcel Duchamp: The Art of the Possible,” a 2019 documentary by Matthew Taylors.
The film explores the life, philosophy, and impact of one of the most influential early 20th century modernists. Transcending the biopic genre, “The Art of the Possible” reveals how Duchamp changed the public consciousness and understanding of aesthetics, art, and culture through his forward-thinking ideas and philosophy. The film will be introduced by Alicia Longwell, Ph.D., The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator.
“The Art of the Possible” breaks down Duchamp’s concepts and applies them to both historical events and the modernist explosion that blanketed the art world in the early 20th Century. Through clips of and commentary by Marina Abramovic, Larry Bell, Michel Gondry, Bibbe Hansen, Jeff Koons, Paul Matisse, Edward Ruscha, Stefan Sagmeister, Arturo Schwarz, Carolee Schneemann, and others, the film highlights the singular impact of Duchamp’s philosophy on art and examines how the artist’s revolutionary ideas from 100 years ago shaped the 21st century and modern day. Ultimately, “Marcel Duchamp: The Art of the Possible” is a guide to exploring the possibilities in every artistic endeavor and showcasing how Duchamp’s ideas gave generations of artists the intellectual backing to pursue new ideas.
