This week marks the 67th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. As part of the conference, a parallel event hosted by Sag Harbor resident, Queen Angelique-Monet of Eti-Oni, titled “New Generation of Storytellers,” is set for March 10, through her organization New Generation In Action and Artisan Fair International (A.F.I.) World Peace Initiative. The event will be held at 10:30 AM at the Salvation Army Auditorium.
The event will have speakers who have used their work in the arts to support women. This includes former chairman of Public Broadcasting, award winning filmmaking Cheryl Halpern who will deliver the keynote address and will screen her film “Holy Prostitution,” endorsed by the Ministry of Religion from Indonesia. Halpern will also celebrate the five year anniversary of her organization, Visions of Peace Initiative.
The Co-Director of the film, Princess Natasha Dematra will receive the New Generation In Action’s “Youth Lady of The Year,” 2023 award for her work as a filmmaker since age 11. A goodwill message will be given by Ambassador Dr. Olufolake Abdulrazaq, the First Lady of Kwara State, Nigeria and the founder of Ajike People Support Centre.
Additional highlights of the event include a spotlight on the Role Indigenous Women Play in Society with speaker Kayla Lookinghorse-Smith, a Native American elder and fashion designer. The speaker line up includes J.D. Rose, a studio news director in the New York City area; Jessica Mackin-Cipro, the co-publisher of James Lane Post; Lucia Kaiser, two time Emmy Award-winning producer, philanthropist, and speaker; NGIA Youth Leader, Jagrit Bajwa; Paulette Elbers, senior vice president of entitlements & financial support services at Life’s WORC; and Amanda Greaves, director of residential and DEIA committee chair.
Queen Angelique-Monet and Halpern are also set to receive service recognitions from the New York City Mayor’s Office.
