Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in Bridgehampton presents “New Work” paintings on paper by Ky Anderson, and wall constructions using old book covers by Conny Goeltz Schmidt. The show opens on Saturday, April 9 and runs through Sunday, May 1.
Anderson’s paintings on paper contain her notable abstract imagery and layers of bold, linear forms. Channeling the primitive origins of drawing with a serene palette and simple, bold shapes, she constructs compositions that are not quite symmetric, but beautifully balanced. Her images are often built from the foundation of a large dome or pointed form, recalling a wilderness or landscape. She builds forms with forces that act on each other, balancing each other, revealing the underlying structure in an imagined nature.
Anderson lives and works in Kansas City and her work has been shown in art galleries around the country and Europe as well as the Haggerty Gallery at the University of Dallas. Her paintings are in numerous public and private collections.
Schmitt creates geometric collages and sculptures with vintage book parts. “My work is a never-ending story where I play with deconstruction and reconstruction and changing dimensionality – often within one piece. On the hunt for textured surfaces and faded colors, I deconstruct discarded vintage books. By means of decollage, the element of chance becomes an integral part of the process. The interplay of sizes, shapes, and color leads me on a search for the perfect placement of my salvaged and manipulated material. This pursuit becomes both meditation and ritual,” she said.
Schmitt lives and works in Massachusetts and her work has been shown at the Galerie Biesenbach in Cologne Germany, the Painting Center in New York, the Danforth Museum is Massachusetts as well as galleries around the United States and Europe.
