Last month the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF) was contacted by Charles Canavan, a pilot and flight instructor at the East Hampton Airport with an interesting proposal in association with the East Hampton Alliance.
In order for his students to get certified –- and also for licensed pilots to get recertified –- they need a certain amount of monitored flying time. Normally, they take these flights just to log in the hours, but he thought maybe he could do some good on these trips and help ARF by assisting in some of its rescue transports when hours were needed.
It turns out that Brian LaBelle, an East Hampton Police officer and pilot needed to be recertified and offered his plane and all expenses for a rescue transport.
On Friday, December 18, Canavan and LaBelle flew to Camden, South Carolina to meet ARF’s rescue partner to pick up 15 puppies and arrived back at the East Hampton Airport around 5 PM.
Upon arrival at ARF, the animals will be medically cleared by veterinarians — including spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped — before they will be put up for adoption. Once they are available for adoption, they will be posted on the ARF website.
