The Parrish Art Museum will partner with The Jam Session, Inc. as a venue for the first annual Hamptons Jazz Fest 2021, on Friday, July 16, from 6 to 7:30 PM, with a concert by Morris Goldberg and Safro Jazz with special guests trumpet player Diego Urcola, and bassist Bakithi Kumalo.
Both Goldberg and Kumalo recorded for Paul Simon on his 1986 Grammy-Winning Album of the Year, “Graceland.” The event takes place outdoors on the on the museum’s terrace and event lawn, rain or shine.
It is offered free of charge thanks to the The Jam Session, in collaboration with a major donor and life-long jazz enthusiast who celebrates the true American art form. Guests may attend the concert at the museum or watch the livestream on the Parrish YouTube channel.
In addition to his association with Simon, playing the soprano sax and penny whistle solo on the song “You Can Call Me Al,” Goldberg has worked and toured with Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and Harry Belafonte, among many others. He served as the woodwind specialist on The Rosie O’Donnell Show for six years and played for many artists including Tony Bennett and Phil Collins.
Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bassist, composer, and vocalist, is renowned for his fretless bass run on “You Can Call Me Al.” He has toured regularly with Simon, released several solo records, and performed as a session musician with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Randy Brecker, Grover Washington Jr., Cindy Lauper, and Micky Hart.
Three-time Grammy Award nominee, trumpeter Diego Urcola, has been a member of the Paquito D’Rivera Quintet since 1991. He performs regularly with the legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band.
