The Social Justice Committee of Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor, in partnership with The Church in Sag Harbor, will welcome Don Lemon, host of CNN’s “Don Lemon Tonight,” to talk about his book “This is the Fire.”
This book talk will take place on Sunday, June 13, at 10 AM, with local historian Dr. Georgette Grier-Key moderating the discussion. Dr. Grier-Key is the Executive Director of the Eastville Community Historical Society in Sag Harbor.
As America’s only Black prime-time anchor, Lemon’s daily monologues on racism and America’s systemic flaws speak for his millions of fans. Lemon was the leading voice on CNN guiding viewers through the death of George Floyd and a summer of nationwide protests and riots. The book offers an urgent, deeply personal plea that weaves in some of Lemon’s own experiences here on the East End. He displays how deep the problems lie and what can be done to begin to fix them.
Dr. Grier-Key believed that Lemon, “captured the pulse of what so many people are feeling but couldn’t find the words to express . . . Witnessing repeated traumatic racism and police killings was just so morally shocking and wrong, and this book helps spark the conversation and healing.”
“We must all commit to building bridges across our community to promote social justice, and this event represents an important segment in our ongoing educational programs on bigotry and hate,” said Andrea Klausner, co-chair of the SJC.
April Gornik, one of the founding members of The Church, commented, “The Church was founded to be a cultural and community benefit. What better benefits our local and national communities than to help continue the conversation on social justice in America that Don Lemon’s book represents? We are honored to host this distinguished and important event.”
This free event will be streamed live from The Church, but pre-registration is required through this link. You may also purchase a signed copy of Lemon’s book from Canio’s Books in Sag Harbor by calling 631-725-4926 or emailing caniosbooks@verizon.net.
