Master Impressions: Artists And Printers On The South Fork

The Church

Featuring approximately 20 works dating from 1965-2010 by artists who have made art on the South Fork of Long Island, our first exhibition of 2024 highlights ways in which artists of the region have masterfully explored varied techniques of the medium. Prints are a testament to the collaborative potential of the creative process and demonstrate how artists, printers, and the press working together can achieve results that surpass individual expertise.

The artworks are drawn from the rich collections of our fellow institutions as well as a small number of collectors, artists, and printers living and working in the region. Artists to be featured include stalwarts like Elaine de KooningConnie FoxRoy LichtensteinRobert Motherwell, and Alfonso Ossorio; those with surprising ties to the East End like Hale WoodruffRomare BeardenJames Rosenquist, and Jasper Johns; artists with pivotal roles in the advancement of the medium like Abraham Rattner and Dan Welden; and other discoveries and surprises.  The full list of artists is below.

The show is curated by Samuel Havens, Workshop and Residency Manager at The Church and a printmaker in his own right, with Sara Cochran, Chief Curator.

The exhibition also ties to the popular Printmaking program at The Church. In addition to our bi-monthly workshop offerings in monotype printmaking, a brand-new course on the subject will be presented during the time of the exhibition. The course, The Church’s first, will be held over two weeks in February and explore intaglio techniques of drypoint, line-etch, and aquatint. In addition, educational talks and other features are planned around the exhibition

Featuring:

Romare Bearden, Nanette Carter, Robert Dash, Elaine de Kooning, Eric Fischl, Dan Flavin, Connie Fox, April Gornik, Grace Hartigan, Mary Heilmann, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Fay Lansner, Gerson Leiber, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Longo, Robert Motherwell, Alfonso Ossorio, Ellen Peckham, Jackson Pollock, Abraham Rattner, Dan Rizzie, James Rosenquist, Esteban Vicente, Dan Welden, and Hale Woodruff

Of the exhibition, Samuel Says:

“As a printmaker, I know the magic of the press and I am excited to share this exhibition that celebrates the medium. The works in this show continue The Church’s characteristic way of exploring and examining the bounty of the East End within the global context of contemporary art.”
