Curator Statement- Karyn Mannix (2026)
The Second Annual BANNED BOOK PROJECT confronts growing efforts to restrict access to stories, ideas, and histories. By erasing history, these efforts threaten our freedom to read, learn, question, imagine, and think for ourselves.
Books are increasingly targeted for political and ideological reasons, particularly those that explore race, gender, sexuality, religion, and identity.
Censorship is about power: who gets to tell the story, who gets to preserve the story, and who gets to decide which stories are acceptable.
This exhibition is a reminder that access to diverse books is essential to a free and thoughtful society. It encourages critical thinking and reflection of the world around us.
A society that fears a book is not protecting itself from an object. It is protecting itself from an idea.
