Montauk Beach House will host “Escape to the Garden,” a solo exhibition by acclaimed contemporary American painter Sonya Sklaroff. This immersive display of Sklaroff’s evocative oil on canvas and works on paper will be open to the public from August 9 to 14.
“Escape to the Garden” is a vivid exploration of natural beauty through Sklaroff’s distinctive lens. Her paintings transcend mere representations of gardens, utilizing thick impasto paint and a bold color palette to encapsulate the emotional resonance and transformative power of these green havens. Sklaroff’s work is a testament to the ability of gardens to offer solace and inspiration, especially during challenging times.
Reflecting on the origins of her work, Sklaroff shared, “During the pandemic, my family and I were confined to our New York City apartment. Our daily walks along the East River became a cherished escape. As spring unfolded, we were uplifted by the emergence of tulips, cherry blossoms, and the presence of butterflies and bees.”
In search of respite from the city’s confines, Sklaroff and her family sought out garden spaces and quiet retreats. These colorful and serene environments became her artistic sanctuaries, deeply influencing her vibrant and textural paintings. “Visitors to my studio shared their pandemic experiences, forging new friendships and deepening my connection to these sacred spaces,” Sklaroff recounted. “These gardens allowed me to reconnect with my artistic spirit and the beauty of the world.”
The exhibition features a compelling collection of works created during and after the pandemic, including pieces inspired by gardens in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York State, as well as Italy and Switzerland. Accompanying the exhibition is a color hardback book titled “Escape to the Garden,” offering an in-depth look into Sklaroff’s creative journey and artistic process.
