Sag Harbor’s Maritime Legacy Comes Alive With ‘The Boat & The Whale’ Exhibit At The Whaling & Historical Museum

Artwork by Georgia Suter

“The Boat & The Whale” exhibit is on view at Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum through the end of July.

The show, curated by Sag Harbor artist and resident Dave. O, includes works by 12 local artists of the East End and brings to life Sag Harbor’s rich maritime history while honoring the history of the museum as the former home of Benjamin Huntting, a successful whaleship owner. The building is a piece of artwork in itself – built circa 1845 for $7,000 and designed by the famed New York architect Minard LaFever. The roof is lined with a row of decorative alternating flensing knives and blubber spades, and a whale jawbone frames the front door.

The current exhibit, which features paintings and sculpture, is located across the hall from an array of whaling industry artifacts, including a giant try pot once used to render whale blubber into oil. Visitors can view the current show and then explore Sag Harbor’s maritime history.

Artists in the show include Paton Miller, Scott Bluedorn, Georgia Suter, Isadora Capraro, Jim Gingerich, Franco Cuttica, Forrest Gray, Nick Whelan, Kevin Ink, Loren Eiferman, Cayce Adams, and Andre Benoit.
