According to the Harvard Business Review, the disruption of an industry is “a process whereby a smaller company with fewer resources is able to successfully challenge established incumbent businesses.”
Matthew Breitenbach and Dominic Couzens of Compass are discussing the changing market in the Hamptons and beyond by creating the “Disrupt” series by the Breitenbach Advisory Team.
According to the Disrupt website, Breitenbach and Couzens have launched the video content series to give them a platform to explore the various innovations and “disruptions” happening in real estate, technology, and more. The conversations with industry leaders aim to give the audience insight into the way commerce may be conducted in the years ahead — where we are now, where we are headed, and which major adaptations will be deployed to get us there.
In episode one, they discuss disruption in real estate. One of the topics, for example, is the conversation about the value that brokerages bring to their agents. Agents are looking for empowerment through the brokerage, according to Breitenbach, who has his own brand within his brokerage’s brand.
“The series was inspired by my late father Gerald Couzens and his life’s work as a Sports Medical Journalist and Author,” Couzens explained. “He interviewed the top medical minds across the globe and helped run the Cleveland Clinic’s Top 10 Medical Innovation Summit. His work sparked the idea to collaborate with Matt.”
Breitenbach is actively searching for innovation in the industry. “I have always been amazed how copycat the real estate business is from brokers to brokerages, and I was always curious why everyone always said the same things, had identical listing pitches, and had no innovation or desire to innovate.”
He is on a scale larger than most, having represented many celebrities and athletes, and the pressure to provide value has pushed him to find ways to innovate. “We truly wanted to talk deeply about disruption and innovation in life with some of the world’s most powerful real estate and business entrepreneurs,” he said.
Technology is the cornerstone of the Compass offering to their agents and the Advisory is looking ahead to what more can be expanded and implemented upon traditional methodologies.
Couzens is a native New Yorker and started in real estate at an early age, sharing the management of his family’s two Upper West Side buildings while Breitenbach is from an established family of real estate and builder superstars. They currently have well over $10M in real estate listings.
