A Weekend At Gurney’s Newport

It’s an easy escape from the East End. Just jump on the Orient Point Cross Sound Ferry and once you dock, it’s just an hour away — Gurney’s Newport in Rhode Island. The hotel, which was born in Montauk but has garnered national recognition, offers everything you need for a spectacular weekend away.

Located on Goat Island, and just a hop away from the city’s downtown business district, there are waterviews at every angle.

While at the resort, there is plenty to fill your time during this restful adventure. The Gurney’s Newport skating rink is currently open for season. Why not join for the hotel’s Après Skate? Bundle up to skate and later enjoy cocktails and DJs every weekend through March.

Cozy up in one of the Igloos located on the deck. Find cozy decor and blankets, warm up with the special menu that includes bruschetta grilled cheese with tomato bisque and house-made venison chili, while sipping a caramel espresso martini, Caribbean hot chocolate, or a golden apple cider.

The Seawater Spa at Gurney’s can offer some much needed R&R. It’s surrounded by the sea and the spa offers the antidote to the hustle and bustle, while providing a menu of therapeutic treatments, a private relaxation room, an indoor heated pool, and more. You will also find a fitness center and salon on premise.

Dinner at Showfish, the on-site restaurant, is a must for one-of-a-kind dishes and a wonderful dinner experience. Highlights include the tuna poke, roasted cauliflower, Atlantic salmon, and local oysters on the half shell.

Fan favorite, For Five Coffee, is located in the lobby at Gurney’s for your morning pick-me-up, offering artisanal coffees and a grab-and-go menu with pastries, sandwiches, and more.

If you’re joining during the warmer months, the resort is home to Newport’s only outdoor hotel pool. This saltwater pool sits seaside and offers a private sun deck, lounge chairs, and cabanas. There’s also a marina featuring 22 slips, which can accommodate boats up to 240 feet. Marina guests also receive full resort privileges.

There’s much to do while visiting the city of Newport. During your days, be sure to check out the famous Cliff Walk — while it’s chilly in the winter, it’s also nice to avoid the larger crowds. Visit some of the historic mansions that Newport is known for. The Breakers offers a look into the opulence of the Gilded Age. It was the home of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, and is the grandest of Newport’s summer homes.

While downtown you may also come across Cardines Field, which you’ll see while strolling the streets of this quaint city, a place that holds a lot of history. It’s one of the oldest ballparks in the country. Yogi Berra and Larry Dody once played there during World War II.

And of course, there are no shortage of restaurants and shops while strolling the streets of this quaint city. Try the tried-and-true spots like The Black Pearl, Pasta Beach, The Red Parrot, The Dining Room at The Vanderbilt, or go for a casual bite at Drift Café.
