Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor is gearing up for the world premiere of the new musical “Double Helix,” which will kick off the 2023 Mainstage Season. Previews will run from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday June 2, with a “Pay What You Can” night on Tuesdays May 30. Opening night is Saturday, June 3, followed by a party.
“Double Helix” tells the story of the race to discover the structure of DNA in the 1950s and follows the brilliant young researcher, Rosalind Franklin, as she contends with adversity, anti-semitism, and love to uncover one of life’s great mysteries. The premiere coincides with the 70th anniversary of that discovery, in which Franklin’s contributions played an integral role.
The show was written by Madeline Myers, is directed by Scott Schwartz, Bay Street Theater’s Artistic Director and stars Samantha Massell, who has appeared on Broadway, television, in movies, and alongside symphonies, was last seen on Broadway as Hodel in the acclaimed revival of “Fiddler on the Roof.”
