In celebration of World Lion Day & World Elephant Day, Empowers Africa, a non-profit dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa conservation, held its 2023 annual film festival in Southampton, in partnership with the Southampton Arts Center.
Attendees gathered on the lawn of the Southampton Arts Center to enjoy three documentary films including episode 1 of the newly released “Secrets of the Elephants.” The four-part series by James Cameron, with narration by Natalie Portman, has received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Documentary Series and Outstanding Cinematography.
The evening also included the full-feature documentary, “Birth of a Pride,” by award-winning wildlife conservation photographers and National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence Beverly and Dereck Joubert. A short documentary featuring some of Empowers Africa’s conservation initiatives, including dehorning rhinos, was also screened.
“Sitting under the stars while watching incredible conservation films couldn’t be a more perfect way to spend an August summer night. This annual event is something the Southampton Community looks forward to every year,” said Martha McGuinness, Director of Partnerships and Programs for Empowers Africa.
