Southampton Arts Center presents the opening of “Couples Squared,” an exhibition curated by Phyllis Tuchman, running from July 27 to September 14. This unique showcase delves into the dynamic interplay between creative partners, presenting a diverse array of paintings, sculptures, and photographs that span the spectrum of artistic expression.
Inspired by algebra and Medieval alchemical magic, “Couples Squared” transforms raw ideas and scribbles into compelling visual narratives that challenge perceptions and evoke deep emotional responses. The term “Couples Squared” references a common algebraic equation, but the art on display transcends mathematics to embody the mysterious and unpredictable nature of collaborative creation.
Reflecting the evolution from the 1940s and 1950s New York School era, where couples like Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler pioneered abstraction, today’s artists present a wider variety of themes and subjects.
The exhibition features nonrepresentational works alongside portraits, figures, landscapes, and seascapes, executed in styles ranging from vivid colors and lively patterns to subdued passages.
Artists featured in this exhibition include Derrick Adams, John Alexander, Carl Andre, Sebastien Blanck, Ross Bleckner, Michael Chuapoco, Paula Deluccia, Roy Dowell, Austin Eddy, Eric Fischl, Hermine Ford, Eric Freeman, John Giorno, April Gornik, Todd Gray, Isca Greenfield-Sanders, Nancy Holt, Shara Hughes, Bryan Hunt, Melissa Kretschmer, Matvey Levenstein, Rima Mardoyan, Eddie Martinez, Robert Moskowitz, Sam Moyer, Bruce Nauman, Lari Pittman, Larry Poons, Ugo Rondinone, Susan Rothenberg, Kyungmi Shin, Robert Smithson, Ned Smyth, Fiona Waterstreet, Lucy Winton, and Lisa Yuskavage.
“This exhibition celebrates the power of creative partnerships and the incredible diversity of artistic expression that emerges from these collaborations,” said Christina Strassfield, Executive Director of Southampton Arts Center. “We are excited to showcase the work of these talented artists and invite the community to experience the magic of ‘Couples Squared.'”
Join for the opening reception on July 27 from 6 to 8 PM.
