Southampton’s First-Ever Historic Bike Route Launching Memorial Day Weekend

On Sunday, May 29, the inaugural Southampton Bike Safety Event will be held across the village from 1 to 4 PM. The brainchild of the Southampton Village Climate Action Committee, the event will also be the launch of the village’s first-ever historic bike route.

A seven-mile loop, this safe route takes recreationists around the wide streets of Southampton to critical cultural institutions and places of historical significance. Working with the Southampton History Museum, the Southampton African American Museum and the Shinnecock Nation, the route aims to incorporate many facets of the village’s illustrious history. From the sandy outlook of Dune Church to the newly inaugurated Southampton African American Museum, this historic loop showcases the picturesque beauty of Southampton. Other notable stops on the route include the new Moses Park, Lake Agawam Park, the Pyrrhus Concer homestead, the Halsey House & Garden, and the Rogers Mansion.

Accessible by QR code and available at SouthamptonHistory.org/tours, the historic bike route will remain available year-round for any interested participants. Pamphlets with the printed route will also be available at the Southampton Village Chamber of Commerce, Rotations Bicycle Center, and Southampton Village Hall.

The route begins and ends at the Southampton History Museum (17 Meeting House Lane, Southampton) where local police will be offering bike safety tips, including helmet fittings and assistance for mounting toddler bike seats. PedalShare will be offering bike rentals at the museum; Suffolk County’s Hike Bike Technical Advisory Committee Bike will also be in attendance. Additionally, Boxed Water donated waters for participants.

In addition to the route and safety demonstrations, enthusiasts will be asked to give feedback on where they think bike racks should be installed across the village. The group hopes to encourage biking across Southampton Village and aims to make streets safer. The bike rack feedback session will be held at Rogers Mansions. Biking fans can also sign up to stay informed on future Southampton Village bike events and plans.
