Surf Film ‘Broken Molds’ At Parrish Art Museum

The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill presents a screening of surf film “Broken Molds” on Friday, November 26, at 6 PM.

The development of windsurfing is complicated: joyous successes are paired with a dramatic family saga, and the question of who created the sport is riddled with controversy. Jace Panebianco’s film “Broken Molds” provides insight into the storied past of windsurfing, its development over generations, and the saga of a family beset by lawsuits, illness, and broken friendships. At the same time, the film looks to the future of the windsurfing, all through the use sensational images and stunning footage.

The story begins in 1960s California, with Hoyle Schweitzer and his friends Tom Morey, Hobie Alter, and Grubby Clark — all consumed by their love of surfing. Following an introduction by Gerry Lopez, “Broken Molds” delves into the origin story of the sport and the Schweitzer family’s tireless effort promote it worldwide. The narrative told through never-before-seen 16mm archive film and cutting edge Red Digital Cinema cameras to transport the viewer to seminal moments in watersport history. Action segments featuring the world’s most exciting watersports athletes, are set to an epic soundtrack featuring Blondie, Flock of Seagulls, Guns N’ Roses, and more.
