The White Room Gallery in East Hampton presents the exhibit “Wild Things.” An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 14, from 5 to 7 PM.
“The word wild in the 13th century meant out of control. In the 17th century, it was used to describe intense emotional states like wild with excitement, and also, by those more judgmental, ‘decivilized humans.’ For this exhibit, we jump to the 21st century and add things to the wild, which include beautiful portraits of animals through photography and paintings alongside provocative environmental commentaries of the risk to the wild on canvas,” read a curator’s quote from Andrea McCafferty and Kat O’Neill.
“Self-portraits and jungle pairings that elucidate the interior of the artist or something much deeper share the stage with Mother Nature in all her wild beauty. In this century, you cannot have wild things without celebrities captured in all their wildness. So, add to the mix several revered photographers who caught the essence of wild, whether it is Bowie with a wolf, or Lady Gaga in an underground burial ground, or Kim Kardashian in a coffin, or Faye Dunaway with an Oscar that, in her mind, could possibly kill her career. ‘Wild Things’ seemed the perfect exhibit to embrace the spirit of women’s history month, as without the fierceness that the 13th century would reference as being out of control, which no doubt was attributed solely to women, where would we be now? Here’s to all the women through the centuries that had to endure and to all the women in the 20th century that made the difference. Here’s to all the ‘Wild Things,’” the statement continued.
Artists include Markus Klinko, Stephen Hall, Mital Patel, Steve Joester, Jack Flo, Rich Mothes, Michael Lotenero, Bob Tabor, Kasia G, and more.
The exhibit will run through April 12.
