Each week James Lane Post will highlight a different spot to explore outdoors on the East End in our series “A Walk Outside.” This week: Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains Preserve.
Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains Preserve offers 788-acres of undeveloped property — most well known for its rare dwarf pine trees.
It’s perfect for hiking and viewing wildlife. And, as it turns out, is an absolute winter wonderland when covered with a blanket of snow.
The preserve is located just north of the Francis S. Gabreski Airport — between Old Riverhead Road and Quogue Riverhead Road.
While exploring, you may even see animals like the white-tailed deer, red fox, Eastern cottontail, opossum, red-tailed hawk, turkey, bald eagle, osprey, or the pine warbler.
