Saturday, April 24 is Independent Bookstore Day.
Independent Bookstore Day is a one-day national celebration that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April.
Locally, BookHampton in East Hampton and Red Jacket Books in Westhampton Beach are participating.
“Each store is unique and independent, and every party is different,” read a statement from Indie Bound, the celebration’s organizers. “But in addition to authors, live music, cupcakes, scavenger hunts, kids events, art tables, readings, barbecues, contests, and other fun stuff, there are exclusive books and literary items that you can only get on that day. Not before. Not after. Nowhere else.”
Some of those items include a Baby Yoda onesie or The ABC of Black History Print. There’s an exclusive signed edition of “Cook, Eat, Repeat” by Nigella Lawson. BookHampton’s website states that those who purchase Stephen King’s “In The Tall Grass” will receive a complimentary copy of “Later.”
There are a variety of virtual book events leading up the Independent Bookstore Day, including a conversation with Glennon Doyle, this year’s Bookstore Day Author Ambassador, and Alexandra Elle on Thursday, April 22, at 7:30 PM.
“I’m honored to be 2021 Bookstore Day Author Ambassador to support these community businesses — so they can keep doing the vital work of supporting our communities,” said Doyle.
“Due to popular demand, we’ll be bringing back our discount wheel, along with other exciting things like I.B.D. exclusive tote bags, pencils, giveaways, and even a few signed books (have you heard of this guy called Stephen King?),” read a statement on Red Jacket Books’ website. “Some things will be available online, but come down to our Westhampton Beach location to get the full experience!”
