Open Studio & Art Show: Pipi Deer’s Lyrical World

View Gallery 23 Photos

On June 11, Martin Architects in Bridgehampton opened its doors for the Open Studio & Art Show featuring poignant new photography and art by Sag Harbor-based artist Pipi Deer. The firm’s studio transformed into a dreamy gallery where emotion, memory, and light combined. Guests entered the deeply personal and poetic world that Deer captures through her art and lens. She even had a clothing rack of deconstructed gowns and other apparel reminiscent of Helmut Lang’s early works.

Pipi Deer’s work reveals layers of meaning hidden in everyday objects with a punk rock vibe. A wooden stool, an unmade bed, broken and painted plates that are reminiscent of Julian Schnabel — each one carries a quiet emotional weight, shown with a dreamlike calmness and haunting closeness. Her art and photographs balance the inner and outer worlds, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and feel.

Deer often appears in her work as an artist or seeker. She adds both story and myth to her images. In one photo, she carries an antique dresser across a field. In another, she lies still like a ballerina on an iron bed. Although her photographs have a cinematic feel, she captures them using a mix of tools — Polaroids, Lomos, Holgas, Leica M-8s, underwater disposables, and even cell phones. This variety reflects the spontaneous and genuine nature of her work, drawn from real life.

The setting at Martin Architects — known for its modern and light-filled designs — was a perfect match for Deer’s art. The architectural space echoed the emotional structure of the photos: simple, intentional, and full of presence.

To add some East End charm to the evening, guests enjoyed fresh oysters shucked on the spot by Oyster Bliss. Their presence brought a relaxed, celebratory vibe to the otherwise thoughtful tone of the show.

The Open Studio & Art Show will be on view at Martin Architects’ Bridgehampton office throughout the summer.
