The South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO) in Bridgehampton will collaborate with the South Fork Sea Farmers Organization to collect oyster shells for oyster reef restoration projects.
A trailer for dropped-off shells is available all day for the public to stop by and assist in the collection of oyster shells previously consumed at home or in restaurants. The shells collected will be recycled to build oyster reefs necessary for oyster spat recruitment and to mitigate storm surge impacts along our shorelines.
“We are excited to have the public’s help in the collection of shells for this very important project,” said Frank Quevedo, SOFO’s executive director. “Instead of throwing your shells away in the garbage, drop them off at SOFO and have a direct impact in sustaining the prosperity of our marine environment.”
