The Watermill Center will celebrate Juneteenth with a special edition of its Artists’ Table brunch series on Saturday, June 21, featuring artist Tariku Shiferaw and chef Cleon Clarke of Page Sag Harbor. Presented in partnership with the Hamptons Black Arts Council, the event will showcase Shiferaw’s latest series, “Mata Semay,” which translates to “night skies” in Amharic, exploring a reimagined mythology of the night sky that incorporates diasporic cultural contributions on a global scale.
The New York-based artist, whose work addresses space-making within art and societal structures, has exhibited at prestigious venues including the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 2017 Biennial, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Following Shiferaw’s presentation, guests will enjoy an artist-inspired meal prepared by Clarke, Executive Chef of Sag Harbor’s popular bistro Page.
The event, which runs from noon to 2:30 PM, is part of an ongoing collaboration between Watermill and the Hamptons Black Arts Council, a nonprofit organization founded in 2023 by Storm Ascher to advocate for Black arts institutions on the East End.
Artists’ Table is Watermill’s year-round series that connects the public with the center’s international artists-in-residence through private presentations and chef-prepared meals. The program is supported by Drs. Mark and June Halsey and Halsey Dermatology.
Tickets are $125. For reservations and information, contact events@watermillcenter.org.
