James Lane Post was awarded the second place prize for Best Use of Instagram by the Press Club of Long Island, a professional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, as part of its 2021 media awards.
“I am thrilled that @jameslanepost has received this award,” said James Lane Post’s editor-in-chief Jessica Mackin-Cipro. “We had only launched a month before the end of 2020 — I threw our hat in the ring and I’m honored to be recognized alongside institutions like Newsday and News 12.”
Newsday won third place in the same category, while News 12 took home the top honors. The @jameslanepost Instagram is managed by Mackin-Cipro and co-publisher Ty Wenzel.
Mackin-Cipro also received two awards for Dan’s Papers, for articles written during her time as editor-at-large. “Harvesting Hope In Hard Times,” a story about the state of agriculture on the East End during Covid-19, and an interview with architect Gary Lawrance on the “Mansions of the Gilded Age” received honors in the Neighborhood/Community and History categories, respectively.
The Independent Newspaper, where Mackin-Cipro served as executive editor for many years, also won three awards. (The Independent, which received second place for Best Community Weekly Newspaper from PCLI and Newspaper of the Year from the New York Press Association in 2020, was discontinued following a merger with Dan’s Papers in June of 2020.)
Heather Buchanan won first place in the Humor category for her column Kiss & Tell in The Independent Newspaper. The Kiss & Tell column continues to appear in James Lane Post. Two prizes were awarded to The Independent for articles penned by Bridget LeRoy in the categories of Non-Local News/Feature and Arts.
Additional East End honors went to Taylor K. Vecsey, who took home one award for Dan’s Papers and three for the East Hampton Star. David Taylor and Timothy Bolger each received one award for Dan’s Papers. WLIW-FM received five awards in the radio portion of the contest, including Best Radio News Station, and honors for the shows “Behind The Headlines” with the Express News Group and “Sundays On The East End,” hosted by LeRoy and Alec Sokolow.
The Sag Harbor Express was awarded Best Community Weekly Newspaper for 2021.
