Each week James Lane Post will highlight a different spot to explore outdoors on the East End in our series “A Walk Outside.” This week: The Quogue Wildlife Refuge.
The Quogue Wildlife Refuge is non-profit nature preserve, located on 300 acres of land. Founded in 1934, the refuge is home to diverse wildlife.
You’ll find seven miles of trails to walk through forests and ponds, while exploring these diverse habitats.
An outdoor complex at the refuge also houses permanently injured wildlife that require care. This includes owls, fox, falcons, and other native animals.
Among other events, both virtual and in-person, there will be a socially distanced full moon night hike on Wednesday, January 27. The guided hike will take you through the forest to North Pond. Guests can look and listen for nocturnal creatures, while enjoying night vision activities via moonlight. The costs is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. It starts at 5 PM.
The refuge is open every day. For more info, visit www.quoguewildliferefuge.org.
