PAUL CEZANNE AND JAMES WHISTLER

In this 5-week watercolor workshop we will focus on the watercolors of Post-Impressionists Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) and James Whistler (1834-1903). They met while in Paris in the 1860’s, when Paris was the center of literary and artistic activity. While both used watercolor as preparatory sketches for larger oils, their approaches to the medium were very different. We will explore their techniques and apply them to our own work. Weekly demonstrations of watercolor techniques will include gradated washes, wet on wet, wet into dry, and dry brush.

• 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 Arches cold pressed watercolor block
• 10 x 14 or 12 x 16 Arches cold pressed watercolor block
• Canson Mixed Media Sketch Pad 14 x 17
• Small water spray bottle and/or Pipettes
• Brushes: Princeton Neptune Series 4750 Synthetic Squirrel Brushes (Budget)
• Da Vinci Casaneo Synthetic Squirrel Watercolor Brushes (Moderate )
• Winsor Newton Series 995 Flat Wash Brushes (Moderate)
• Isabey Vintage Siberian Blue Squirrel Brushes (Expensive)
• Please bring: 1” or 1 1/2 “Mottler, #8 round, 1/2” oval wash, 3/4” or 1” oval wash. 1” flat. Any additional brushes are up to each student.
• #2 Pencil and Eraser
• Plastic containers for water
• Watercolor palette. John Pike Palette or Materson Aqua Pro Watercolor Palette
• Watercolors: Paynes Gray, Ultramarine blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt blue, Prussian Blue, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Shadow Green, Viridian, Burnt Umber
• Paint Brands: Sennelier, Holbein, Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith, Gray, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Lemon, Shadow Green (Holbein), Grey of Grey (Holbein), Permanent White Gouache or Chinese White Watercolor. Additional colors are up to each student.
