Heart of the Hamptons — a nonprofit organization based in Southampton that provides food, clothing, and services to those in need on the East End — is hosting its popular annual Polar Bear Plunge. This year the event will encourage community members to come together from a distance with a car parade and drive-thru on Saturday, December 12. Participants are also welcome to take part in a DIY plunge. “On your own time, jump in the ocean, bay, lake or kiddie pool,” reads the HOH website.
The money raised will help those in need in the community through its food pantry and assistance programs. Some of the services and items offered include hot meals for the homebound, warm coats, emergency fuel oil, supplies and clothing for school children, medical transportation, and food.
“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will not be plunging together this year, but the tradition continues!” reads the site.
The car parade begins at the Southampton Train Station at 9 AM on Saturday, December 12. The parade of cars will continue through the village and end at Coopers Beach. Participants are encouraged to “Deck out your ride for the parade! Streamers and posters are encouraged!”
Participants are also welcome to meet at Coopers to pick up a hat and submit donations from 10 AM to noon, while remaining in the car.
Those who participated in the virtual DIY plunge, were asked to submit a video. A compilation of the plunges will be released on December 12.
“All of our plungers have stepped up to the plate to keep the plunge tradition alive!” reads an Instagram post from the foundation. “We are beyond impressed and grateful for each and every one of you.”
Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $25, and the foundation is close to reaching its goal of $250,000. Since its first Polar Bear Plunge in 2004, HOH has raised over $900,000.
