Jean Shafiroff Leads Big Dog Toy and Food Drive

Southampton philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, the ambassador-at-large for the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, is leading a Big Dog Toy and Food Drive this December.

The drive, which has an emphasis on big dogs, was inspired by Champ and Major, President-elect Joe Biden’s two German Shepherds, Major being the first dog in the White House adopted from a shelter. The drive aims to shine a light on the fact that these larger breeds are often stigmatized and overlooked due to their size.

Big dogs are classified as weighing over 40 lbs and oftentimes these gentle giants are not adopted as quickly as smaller dogs. Shafiroff, a passionate animal lover, has rehomed several animals from shelters and has been an advocate for removing the stigma associated with big dogs, specifically Pitbulls. She currently has Rosita, a Pitbull rescued from Antigua.

As a philanthropist, Shafiroff is committed to championing social justice and serves as a volunteer fundraiser and spokesperson for several charitable causes. Her work spans many issues, including improving the lives of under-served populations, women’s rights, healthcare, animal welfare, and resources for children in need.

The Southampton Animal Shelter is a privately funded non-profit organization. The no-kill shelter is nationally recognized and has an extraordinarily high adoption rate of 96 percent. All staff and volunteers adhere to the policy where “no animal is left behind.”

The shelter will accept not just items for big dogs but all other animals as well. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter (102 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays) between 9 AM and 5 PM or ordered online and delivered directly.

Suggestions for gifts include Kong brand toys, Nylabone brand bones, soft dog treats, cat treats, peanut butter, and more. They ask that those donating do not give rawhide bones or toys. Monetary donations are also welcome at www.southamptonanimalshelter.com/donate.
