On Saturday, October 22,from 5 to 9 PM, local Ukrainian friends will host a fundraiser for Ukraine at Solé East in Montauk. Organized by four friends: Christina Andrushkiw, Lida Chaplynsky, and Alexandra Hamersky, first generation Ukrainian-Americans and local residents of the East End, and Khristina Lew of New Jersey, the fundraiser will channel much needed funds to Ukraine through two organizations, Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) and Foundation to Preserve Ukraine’s Sacral Arts (FTPUSA).
The event will feature local seafood, music by Hot Lava, a performance by the Ukrainian dance ensemble Syzokryli, and more.
“I am a local resident of Montauk and my friends and I are first generation Ukrainian-Americans born in the Diaspora. Our parents escaped Ukraine as children during WW2 when the Soviet Union took over Ukraine. They eventually made their way to the States and we grew up in the Ukrainian communities in New York City, Philly, Chicago, and Detroit, etc., attending Ukrainian school on Saturdays and spending our summers at Ukrainian Dance camp and scouting camps in the Catskills,” explained Hamersky.
“Many people weren’t aware of Ukraine before the invasion and people ask us why this is all happening. They are interested and want to understand the situation. We are planning a fun Hamptons event with food, drink, and a band, but we would also like to explain why it’s so important for people to care and why the United States and the world should care about and support Ukraine,” said Chaplynsky.
