A renegade high school English teacher at a posh Hamptons private school is placed on probation for “breaking down the time-honored boundary between student and teacher.” In his final days, Ronald Fremont challenges his students to think for themselves, confesses in graphic terms his own failings, both professional and personal, and rails in profanity-laced diatribes against the institutions that have them all “trapped in cages.”
Act Two takes place several years later when, after a stint at a psychiatric institute, Fremont publishes a best-selling memoir and is invited back to Hampton Country Day to deliver the commencement address. Once again addressing a captive audience, Fremont strays from his script, recounting his Lear-like descent into madness, the disintegration of his family, and the lifeline extended to him by a former student — until the ceremony takes an unexpected turn.
