On Friday, June 9 at 6 PM, artist JR will give a talk at the Parrish Art Museum on his work “Les Enfants d’Ouranos.” Installed on the south façade of the Museum, the mural is based on photographs taken by the artist in refugee camps in Rwanda, Ukraine, Mauritania, Greece, and Colombia for his Déplacé.e.s series. JR will discuss the impetus for Déplacé.e.s and share details of his experiences at the camps and collaborations with a variety of communities to create art together. Following the talk, JR will be available for a book signing of his most recent catalogue raisonné, Artist Until I find a Real Job.
The talk marks the launch of Les Enfants d’Ouranos, a new work presented as a large-scale, site-specific installation, coinciding with the museum’s 125th anniversary. The 200-foot long banner, visible from Montauk Highway and on view through May 2024, depicts children playfully running in refugee camps, removed from their original context, and transported into an idealized world. The mural is augmented by Les Enfants d’Ouranos, Bois #6 — a large-scale work by JR from his 2022 series — on view in the museum’s interior lobby gallery through October 22.
