“The Social Dilemma: How Digital Media Undermines Young People’s Wellbeing & What We Can Do About It,” a Zoom discussion presented by the Southampton Arts Center, will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, December 9.
This panel is hosted by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and features Netflix’s “The Social Dilemma” producer Larissa Rhodes.
The film, which took the Internet by storm in September, features former Google, Facebook, and Twitter employees discussing how the business model for digital media directly causes some of the problems we face in today’s society, such as misinformation, polarization, and overuse.
The documentary “explores the dangerous human impact of social networking, with tech experts sounding the alarm on their own creations,” according to Netflix.
As a result, children and young people are at times most susceptible to these creations that encourage endless posting and scrolling.
Rhodes will join in conversation with Josh Golin and Jean Rogers of CCFC, a nonprofit committed to “helping children thrive in an increasingly commercialized, screen-obsessed culture.”
The group will share clips from the film and discuss solutions on how to not let digital media overuse interfere with a child’s development.
It’s recommended that attendees watch “The Social Dilemma” prior to the talk, but it is not necessary. The conversation is free and starts at 7 PM. Visit www.southamptonartscenter.org to register.
