When I think of the East Hampton Village of my childhood, a vivid image of the line outside of Scoop Du Jour, in its previous location on Main Street, comes to mind. It’s a happy memory to recall.
A cool summer night after a hot day at the beach, waiting in line with my family to indulge in the ultimate treat — a chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. There’s something about sitting on a bench in East Hampton village with a cone that just feels right. You’ll probably run into a friend or two, chat for a moment, continue to enjoy each bite of summer sweetness.
This week a sign at Scoop Du Jour read “To the wonderful community of East Hampton, after 30 years of doing business, Scoop Du Jour will be closing its doors. Our last day will be December 20, 2020.” The notice of its closing has brought sadness to many who share similar memories.
The East Hampton eatery has been serving scoops of ice cream for 30 years. It moved to 35 Newtown Lane after its long tenure on Main Street, and has also been home to Dreesen’s Donuts since the early 2000s. For years, lines would flow down the sidewalk for a scoop on any given summer night.
“We are just another casualty of this Pandemic,” the sign continued. “Please come visit us in the springtime at Big Olaf, on the Wharf, in Sag Harbor for your Dreesen’s Donuts and all your flavors of ice cream and yogurt you have loved throughout the years. Thank you, The Scoop Du Jour Family.”
