The Ladies’ Village Improvement Society has announced the public reopening of its historic Sunken Garden on August 10. Visitors can enjoy the garden from 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Saturday.
Ed Hollander, the renowned landscape architect, agreed to redesign the existing garden, which had been ravaged by deer. He then recruited local companies to aid in excavating, soil remediation, installing drains, hardscape, and all the plantings.
The effort was done pro bono as a gift to both the LVIS and the community at large and showcases three-season interest and environmentally responsible garden practices.
Founded in 1895, The Ladies’ Village Improvement Society’s mission is to preserve historical landmarks and the natural environment, support educational advancement, and promote the general welfare of East Hampton through initiatives in beautification, conservation, and historic preservation. The organization focuses on maintaining village open spaces and trees, awarding student scholarships, and advocating for community improvements through village zoning and the preservation of historic properties.
