Writer, Scholar, & Cultural Leader, Alexis Pauline Gumbs Closes The Black Film Festival Hosted By The Center In Bridgehampton

On Saturday, November 8, from 6:30 to 8 PM, for the third consecutive year, The Bridgehampton Childcare & Recreational Center (The Center) will close its annual Black Film Festival with an outstanding literary presentation, an art exhibition by Black female artists, accompanied by Ludmilla Brazil Trio, a Bossa Nova group based on the East End.

This not-to-be missed cultural offering features Alexis Pauline Gumbs, whose biography of the late Audre Lorde, “Survival is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde,” has garnered numerous awards, been named a Publishers Weekly Top 10 Book of 2024, a Time Magazine must-read book of 2024, a Guardian Book of the Week, and was long-listed for the Carnegie Medal in Non Fiction. She is seen as a visionary teacher, scholar, and writer throughout this country and much of the world.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs has a deep connection to this place. In her book, “Undrowned,” she references the importance of her Shinnecock ancestry and time spent with the ocean a few miles away.

The event embodies The Center’s goal of offering cultural programming that resonates with and uplifts the communities it serves, especially illuminating Black artists and intellectual leaders who can inspire the next generation.

According to the Center’s Executive Director, Bonnie Cannon, “it is our honor and privilege to continue to host Black thinkers, artists, and leaders. We all know that education and culture can lead us towards equity and justice for all. We’re thrilled to welcome the brilliant Alexis Pauline Gumbs, whose work is built on her connection to ancestors.”

The art exhibition is curated by East Hampton artist Faith Evans, who is also a teacher at The Center. The exhibiting artists include Cydney “Artcry” Wilson, Faith Evans, Midjine Dupiton, Shanique Young, and Darlene Deloris.

The suggested donation for tickets is $20. People are encouraged to RSVP here.
