June is Adopt a Cat Month at the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. Currently the shelter is housing, feeding, and caring for over 150 cats and kittens. The shelter is trying to help cats (1 year or older) find their “purrfect” homes by offering $25 off their adoption fees.
“Adopting a cat is not only good for the cat but it is good for you as well,” read a statement from the shelter. “Living with a furry feline can have positive effects on your health such as increasing your ability to cope with stress, anxiety, depression and easing your loneliness.”
“Cats bring happiness into your home and they can be quite the companion. They can make you laugh with their funny antics and they can comfort you with their snuggles. Many people don’t realize just how affectionate cats can be. No matter the age cats can provide lots of love,” said Jill Mulvey, the SASF cat coordinator.
Currently it is the middle of kitten season and SASF has over 80 kittens looking for homes.
“While we love our kittens, during this season the number of kittens coming in our door is stagging,” said Katie McEntee, SASF’s director of animal relations.
“My current office cat is name Hobart. He is amazing and he is the best roommate. Hobert is smart, funny and clean. He is the kind of cat that likes to get pet and he loves attention, but he can also chill by himself and be independent,” said McEntee. “He is a real-life version of Garfield — I won’t call him fat (even though he is) but he is definitely a big boy, he is bright orange and I am pretty sure he hates Mondays. I am not sure if he likes Lasagna, but he does have a special diet due to a urinary blockage. He needs an owner that will help monitor this condition and make sure he only eats what he is supposed to. I will miss him a lot, but he deserves a home and family of his own.”
