The Watermill Center presents Community Day on Saturday, July 17. The day offers a chance for the community to experience The Center’s grounds as its Artists-in-Residence do — as a space to explore, unwind, and get inspired.
Offerings include open rehearsals by choreographer Catherine Galasso; a site-specific installation by East End artist Laurie Lambrecht; workshops in African hand-drumming by Jerome Liggon; a special presentation by The Wide Awakes; and Art Quest, a scavenger hunt of The Center’s outdoor art collection.
“This summer is unlike any other at The Center,” shared The Watermill Center’s Public Programs Manager, Andrea Cote. “Historically, we’ve been closed during the summer to host our International Summer Program, but this year we are opening up with more activity than ever before. It’s exciting to be able to offer the community more chances to engage with The Center and our artists in new and creative ways, and kicking off with Community Day was a natural choice.”
A highlight of Community Day is an open rehearsal of Catherine Galasso’s “GET DANCING,” featuring the work of late choreographer Andy de Groat alongside new compositions by Galasso. The piece showcases dancers Doug LeCours, Kristopher K.Q. Pourzal, and Meg Weeks, alongside members of the East End community. The open rehearsal offers the public a unique opportunity to experience “GET DANCING” before its premiere at Guild Hall on Thursday, July 29.
Complimentary offerings throughout the afternoon include an interactive installation by local artist Laurie Lambrecht, inviting the community to add to an ever-growing outdoor artwork, as well as workshops in African hand-drumming by Westhampton native Jerome Liggon. The afternoon will close with a presentation by The Center’s founder, Robert Wilson.
Tickets start at $15 and advanced registration is required. The Center offers reduced pricing for those needing financial assistance. For more information and to register, visit www.eventbrite.com/e/156272670765.
