The iconic “White House” across the street from Town Pond has found a buyer. The last asking price was $7.25 million.
The house has a storied history and was last owned by real estate developer Fred Mengoni from 1989 until his death in 2018 at the age of 94. He rarely visited the property but it was known to be one of his most prized possessions. Mengoni renovated the entire estate right down to the custom Italian marble – an homage to his own roots.
Paul Brennan and Doug Brown of Douglas Elliman were the selling agents.
From Douglas Elliman:
“The White House estate is one of the Hamptons’ most admired homes located at the entrance to East Hampton village. The unique property sits on approximately 3 beautifully landscaped acres. The gracious grounds are reminiscent of a 17th century French estate. Secluded in the rear of the property a cherry tree alee leads to a fountain, and tennis court sheltered by 30-year-old pines. There is a 20′ x 54′ heated gunite pool with pool house and gazebo. A three-car garage is attached to the original 1850s barn. This historic mansion was beautifully restored in 1992 right down to the flower boxes in the grand early American tradition with superb old world craftsmanship. Entering the light filled house from a circular cobblestone driveway, the main level has timeless elements and abundant period details including marble floors, arched doorways and rosewood paneled library. The living room and formal dining room both have fireplaces. Adjacent to the living room is a sun room with diamond-paned windows. A picture-perfect setting for entertaining, the house offers well-proportioned rooms with elegant fireplaces, custom millwork throughout, and detailed architectural appointments. The kitchen is equipped with a double Viking oven, Sub- Zero refrigerator, and coffered ceiling. The second floor has three en suite bedrooms, two with fireplaces. The master suite has direct access to a large private balcony overlooking Town Pond. Down a long hallway are three additional bedrooms, perfect for guests or staff quarters. The third floor has a charming sitting room with an en suite bedroom plus a large playroom. The finished lower level is outfitted with a rosewood bar, fireplace, sauna, Jacuzzi and wine cellar.”
