IFAW, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Southampton Arts Center have partnered to present an evening about the history of whaling on the East End and the current efforts being taken to save the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale from extinction. The event will be held on Sunday, July 9, from 7:30 to 9:30 PM.
With fewer than 340 right whales remaining — and only a quarter of those being reproductive females — public awareness of this critically endangered species is essential for its survival. Prior to a screening of NOVA’s “Saving the Right Whale,” a panel of experts will discuss the history of whaling, the state of the North Atlantic Right Whale today, and what is being done to save these whales.
The panel discussion will feature Carl Safina, founding president of Safina Center as the moderator, Rob Martin of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Shane Weeks of Shinnecock Nation, and Dr. Sarah Sharp an animal rescue veterinarian at IFAW.
This community focused event is free and open to the public. It will also feature a musical performance by percussionist Steve Finkelstein.
