More than 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s Disease, with approximately 60,000 Americans diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disorder each year. April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month.
Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Medicine, New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Friedberg JCC in Oceanside are partnering with the American Parkinson Disease Association to offer a free virtual series featuring four programs that honor and celebrate the Parkinson’s community on Long Island.
The series will take place via Zoom on Fridays in April, from 11 AM to noon.
On April 9, the topic is “COVID-19 Vaccine and COVID-19 and Parkinson’s Disease.” Presenters include Dr. Fredric Weinbaum, the chief medical officer and chief operating officer at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Dr. Hanna Czarkowska of Stony Brook Medicine, Parkinson’s and Movement Disorder Center.
“EAT WELL with Parkinson’s Disease Cooking Demo and Nutritional lecture” is the topic on April 16. The presenter is Paula Montagna, the director of clinical nutrition at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
On April 23, it’s “Parkinson’s Disease: Tips, Tricks and Resources for Coping with your Diagnosis.” Presenters include Caitlin Miranda, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist at Stony Brook Medicine; Erin Harabes, LMHC, neuroscience navigator at Stony Brook Neurosciences Institute; and, Gloria Lebeaux, LCSW, director of social work services at Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC.
“Sing Loud with PD” is the final in the series on April 30. Join the virtual chorus for people living with Parkinson’s Disease and their care partners. The presenter is musical director Valerie diLorenzo.
