Anna Sui’s Fall Winter 2023 runway show in New York City, held at Heaven Can Wait, was inspired by The Peppermint Lounge, a popular discotheque in NYC that was open from 1958 to 1965. It is said to be the launchpad for the Twist craze in the early 1960s.
“I love the photos of Jane Holzer dancing at the Peppermint Lounge. Researching more, I found out the Beatles and the Rolling Stones danced there too. I loved that it was so intimate and such a scene. Whoever was visiting in town and all the cool people were there. That was New York night life. I started to imagine what to wear to the Peppermint Lounge, and this began my Fall 23 collection,” read a statement from the designer.
Attendees of the show included Chase Sui Wonders, Pete Davidson, Marc Jacobs, Sofia Coppola, Karen Elson, Jane Holzer, Michele Hicks, Asia Monet Ray, Ashley Rous, Davis Burleson, and Richie Shazam.
“I wanted little dresses to dance in. Peppermint pink and peppermint green become the color story. Slip dresses in satin or chiffon with lingerie lace trim plus beautiful blouses and bed jackets with the same treatment,” Sui continued.
The collection features pop prints by Kate Rhees printed on chiffon, crushed velvet, and lycra.
Inspired by Sui’s Spring ’94 collection, you’ll find metallic faux leather. Featured in the collection are little dresses, lace trim camisoles, and skirts with a fitted double-breasted coat in pastel pink and mint metallic.
To round out the collection, the evening looks includes lurex trimmed tweeds, slinky snakeskin sequin dresses, and slips with matching tights.
