Southampton Animal Shelter Presents Neuter For A Nickel

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is offering male dog or cat neutering for only a nickel on March 18.

The program, Neuter for a Nickel, is funded by PennyFix. The mission of PennyFix is to provide funding for free alteration services for cats and dogs in every county, municipality, and township nationwide.

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation has received a PennyFix grant to bring this program to the Southampton area. For one day only you have the opportunity to get your male dog or cat neutered for a nickel. Feral cats are welcomed as well.

According to Dr. Nicole Mirante DVM, Southampton Animal Shelter’s Veterinarian, benefits of neutering include eliminating the risk of certain cancers, preventing problems with the prostate gland, and reducing roaming behaviors and sometimes aggression.

“Additionally, by neutering your dog or cat you are doing your part to prevent unwanted litters and helping put an end to pet overpopulation,” she noted.

“Altering a feral cat is the best method for managing and controlling community and feral cat populations,” said Tracy McLaren, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s community relations coordinator. “They are able to return to the wild fixed, live their lives and cannot continue to add to the rapid reproduction rate. This is a great day to take advantage of the low-cost surgery price and fix the feral cats in your area.”

For a nickel, all male dogs and cats will receive their alteration surgeries. All male dogs will also receive pain medication to go home and an e-collar. Older pets or pets with medical impairments may require additional testing, exams, and costs — the veterinarian will assess and discuss with the owner prior to surgery. There is a maximum of five animals per household. All pets must show proof of current rabies vaccination or one will be provided for a $10 charge as per New York State Rabies Regulations.

Appointments are mandatory. Call 631.728.7387 ext. 226 to schedule an appointment.
