Southampton Animal Shelter Volunteer of the Month: Gregory Ficara

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s Volunteer of the Month for December is Gregory Ficara of East Quogue.

“Gregory has been a dedicated volunteer at our shelter for the past three and a half years!” said a statement from the shelter. “He volunteers with us on a weekly basis and can often be found in one of our Catios (indoor cat patios). Gregory loves all animals but his focus at our shelter is on our cats.”

According to the shelter, Ficara’s goal is to socialize the cats who need a little extra time and support. Socializing cats, and getting them used to spending time with humans, helps to prepare them for their forever home. “His kind, calm, and patient demeanor” gains the cat’s trust.

“I like volunteering at the Southampton Animal Shelter two to three times a week because I like being with the animals there,” said Ficara. “The cats and kittens are friendly, and I love to keep them company. They are so happy when I come to see them. We spend time cuddling and playing.”

“Gregory also spends time with our long-term residents. Giving the cats who have been living at the shelter for over a year extra playtime, extra treats, and extra love,” continued the statement. “Gregory is a valued member of our team and we love having him at our shelter.”

“Greg was one of the first volunteers I met when I began working at Southampton Animal Shelter in 2019,” said Crystal Monaco, the volunteer and foster coordinator at the shelter. “He was extremely welcoming and greeted me with a huge smile. I always look forward to the days that Greg comes to volunteer because he makes us laugh and lights up the shelter with his can-do attitude.”

Ficara and his family recently adopted a cat named London. He fell in love with her instantly, according to the shelter.

The shelter is accepting the help of new volunteers. Applications can be found on the shelter’s website.
