Southampton Arts Center To Host Film Screening Of “Primary’

Southampton Arts Center will host a film screening of “Primary” on Thursday, July 16, at 6 PM. “Primary” is filmed by cinéma vérité pioneers Richard Leacock, D.A Pennebaker, and Albert Maysles and features an introduction by Robert Leacock.

Robert Drew’s 1960 film “Primary” is a pioneering work in the documentary movement known as cinéma vérité. “Primary” follows the young charismatic senator from Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy, as he goes head-to-head with established Minnesota senator Hubert Humphrey to win the Wisconsin presidential primary in April 1960.

Robert Leacock is the director and cinematographer of numerous films and commercials, including directing Christy Turlington’s “Catwalk” and filming Madonna’s “Truth Or Dare” and Al Pacino’s “Looking For Richard.” He has filmed celebrities such as Diana Ross and Muhammad Ali, as well as directed commercials for Microsoft and Nike. Robert Leacock is the son of Richard Leacock, who was one of the principal filmmakers of “Primary.”

“We are thrilled to screen ‘Primary,’ as it perfectly ties into our current exhibition ‘The Story of America: 1776-2026, A Celebration of Freedom and Independence,’ which features presidential memorabilia in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States,” said Christina M. Strassfield, Executive Director of SAC.

Tickets are on sale for $10 for SAC members and $15 for general admission. Visit southamptonartscenter.org.
