The Southampton History Museum presents the launch of “Making America,” a new artist-led workshop series celebrating the craft traditions that shaped American life. The series begins on Thursday, May 7, with a hands-on historic embroidery workshop led by renowned fiber artist Erica-Lynn Huberty.

Historic Embroidery: A Workshop with Erica-Lynn Huberty takes place from 1 to 2:30 PM at the Southampton History Museum. Participants will examine examples of 18th- and 19th-century needlework from the museum’s collection, exploring the vital role these textile arts played in everyday life.

Huberty will then guide attendees through several traditional stitching techniques, and each participant will complete a small piece to take home. Space is extremely limited. Advanced ticket purchase is required; the workshop fee is $20 per person.

Huberty is a pioneer in the contemporary fiber arts movement whose work weaves together textiles and sewing arts with watercolor and ink, embroidery, crochet and knitting, and loom-woven grounds — mediums that overlap and inform one another as if created simultaneously. Her practice bridges the historical and the contemporary, making her an ideal guide for this exploration of early American needlework.

“The Making America series is rooted in the Museum’s experience-driven approach to learning. History is often most alive when you can touch it, create it, and carry a piece of it home,” said Sarah Kautz, Southampton History Museum’s Executive Director. “Erica-Lynn’s work embodies a deep appreciation of traditional craft that inspires greater understanding.”
